OUR FOCUS

At The Herbert Trust. we focus on sustainable forestry, as favored in Germany (Spielmann, 2013). Our close-to-nature forest management policy focuses on natural processes to encourage development of a forest that is valuable both ecologically and economically (Forestry in Germany, 2016).

This forest-management mode, called retention forestry, was originally introduced twenty-five years ago in northwestern North America, and was adopted by regions throughout the world (Gustafson et al. 2012).

The Herbert Trust follows these forestry principles:

  • Conserving and establishing structurally diverse and close-to-nature mixed forests
  • Planting of site-adapted and stable tree species
  • Utilisation of natural regeneration where soil and previous stand allow it
  • Dispensing with clear-cutting, all firewood is harvested from dead or down trees
  • Maintaining soil fertility and increasing it, if possible
